Sharpsburg

About 5 miles outside of downtown Pittsburgh, Sharpsburg is a small community along the Allegheny River.  Its land area is just under one square mile with a population of 3,446 residents.  Surrounded by Etna, Aspinwall, Shaler Township, and O’Hara Township, it is part of the Fox Chapel Area School District, which was ranked the #2 School District in the Pittsburgh region, and #6 in the Commonwealth.

  • The borough has a rich history, beginning with the Seneca Indians in the 1700s.  A Seneca member, Guyasuta, was chosen by George Washington to be his party’s hunter guide in 1753.  His name remains prominent throughout the community, such as the Boy Scouts of America’s Camp Guyasuta, and the Annual Guyasuta Days Festival held in August.
  • James Sharp purchased 200 acres in 1826, building a log cabin, and investing his values into the land and community, and finally in 1842 Sharpsburg was officially a borough!
  • In 1869, H.J. Heinz manufactured his first product, horseradish, in his Sharpsburg home.  The Heinz glass works in the borough once manufactured all of the glassware for the company’s products.
  • Available to residents today is a Community Library, a Farmers Market on Saturdays, two community parks, and more!
